Aquaponics Garden — Grow Healthy Organic Food All Year Long

aquaponics gardening

A home aquaponics garden can grow organic food.

Aquaponics is simply the combination of hydroponics, (growing plants without soil) and aquaculture, (raising fish in a tank). The symbiotic relationship between the aquaponics fish and the plants makes for a self-contained food production system that is unbeatable.

The fish waste accumulates in the water and then the water is pumped to the grow bed of the plants.  The nutrients contained in the waste are consumed by the plants and the water is returned to the fish nice and clean. The cycle just keeps repeating itself with a little bit of monitoring of a few water parameters.

An aquaponics system can grow just about any vegetable where the product is grown above ground.  Some of the most popular are beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and even squash. Many herbs are also grown this way and even some fruits such as strawberries.

Not only can you feed your family with a constant supply of fresh healthy produce, but you can save a considerable amount of money versus purchasing these same foods at the supermarket. Because there really isn’t a limitation of a growing season, especially if you plan your aquaponics garden indoors, you can grow this food all year long.

The next big benefit of an aquaponics system is the supply of fish.

We haven’t even touched on the fact that along with the fresh produce of your garden, you can even take advantage of the supply of organic fresh water fish such as tilapia, perch, bass or a few other varieties that are commonly used in an aquaponics garden.  These aquaponics fish serve as a great protein nutrition source for your family and even add some entertainment for youngsters as they watch them swim around in the fish tank.

Now you might be wondering just how you might put an aquaponics system together.

There are typically two different approaches to this situation.  A person could go out and purchase an aquaponics “kit” or order it online.  Or, the second alternative, which in my experience is the most often choice of action, is to order a step by step program that shows you how to build your own system with components you can purchase locally for the most part or easily find online.

What Are Aquaponics Kits?

These premade sets usually contain all the materials that you need in order to build the food production system. These sets usually consist of grow beds, fish tanks, pumps, aerators, pipes and fish foods. Some growers find these sets very helpful as they contain everything in one single package and they have instructions that growers can follow to build the system. Although some people find these sets too expensive, they are considered an ideal solution for those who don’t want to research on how to correctly build the system from scratch.

Things To Consider Before Getting The Pre-made Set

Using ready-to-use sets can be quite expensive compared to the do-it-yourself method so you need to weigh things properly and figure out if getting a complete building set can suit your budget. The cost in purchasing equipment on your own or getting the pre-made set is significantly lower and this is something that you need to think about.

Some sets have equipment or materials that are constructed cheaply so you need to ensure that you are doing business with a reliable manufacturer. There are also sets that have confusing instruction manuals and require additional materials that are not included in the set. So you also need to do research on the type of pre-made set that you choose.

Once you decide to get a set, it is best that you select a fish tank size that can suit your designated area or that can meet the space requirements at home. It is also important that you get the best filtration and water pump system. This will ensure that your crops and your fishes will be constantly maintained.

Choose water movement and purification system according to the project you want to pursue. You may also need to do research on the fish community that you want to choose and ensure that they are healthy.
The best option to come up with the aquaponics system is to actually use a powerful guide that contains step-by-step video instruction on how you can have your own system easily.

Here is a video showing you just one type of kit. The problem I see with most kits is they are quite small and really can’t be scaled up if you want to grow more things.

Aquaponics DIY programs would be my best recommendation.

You don’t need to be a handyman or an experienced craftsman to build your own aquaponics system. All you need are a few basic tools and a good step by step program that will show you exactly how to source all of the components, again most of which can be found locally, and then how to put them together. The other nice thing about this is you can somewhat customize the aquaponics garden to meet your space requirements and your particular needs.

Start enjoying all the benefits of having fresh organic vegetables right there in your home or backyard, and being able to pluck a nice fish right out of the tank to fillet for dinner.
